What Are Dental Veneers?

A veneer is simply a thin shell of dental porcelain that is attached to the front side of a tooth. This allows it to change the shape, size, color, and spacing of the teeth and smile at the same time.

Made of a strong and high-quality material, veneers can improve aesthetics as well as make the teeth stronger, which is especially helpful if the enamel is cracked or chipped.

The Process of Getting Veneers

  • Step 1: You’ll attend a consultation with your dentist to discuss your options and determine if veneers are the best choice based on your goals.
  • Step 2: If veneers are the way to go, we’ll create a mock-up to show you how you’ll look following treatment.
  • Step 3: Once we get your approval, we’ll begin by removing a very thin layer of enamel on the teeth that will have veneers. This ensures the shells lay flat and look natural.
  • Step 4: At the end of this appointment, we’ll capture a digital impression of your prepared teeth (that will be sent to our lab), and you’ll be fitted with temporary veneers.
  • Step 5: A week or so later, you’ll return to our office so we can place your permanent veneers and put the finishing touches on your new smile.

Veneers FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

The very first set of veneers we know of was intended to be a temporary measure to help perfect a movie star’s smile for the big screen, leading some patients to wonder whether these restorations are still meant to be removable today.

But the truth is that these shells typically aren’t intended to come off once they’re cemented over the fronts of your enamel, except by a professional if repairs or replacements are needed. Not only that, but for them to fit correctly, a small amount of enamel must be removed, which doesn’t regenerate. However, because these covers sometimes wear down, they’re often required more “long-term” rather than “permanent”.

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

Are you worried that getting veneers could harm the underlying teeth? It’s natural to wonder what happens to them, and although our team is happy to help enhance your appearance, your oral health is our top priority.

As a result, only a minimal amount of enamel is removed to help preserve more of the natural strength and structure of the underlying teeth. Not only that, but these restorations are durable enough to help resist chips and stains, and can shield the underlying teeth from harm. But only the front sides are covered, so you must continue brushing and flossing twice daily to prevent common oral concerns, such as cavities or gum disease.

Do Veneers Cause a Lisp?

These covers are usually only about 0.2 to 0.5 mm thick, but despite these small dimensions, it can take a few weeks for the sensitive tissues in your mouth to adjust to their presence. Some patients develop a temporary lisp during this transitional period, especially when pronouncing “v”, “s”, or “th” sounds.

Thankfully, this effect is usually temporary and tends to resolve itself after a few days to a couple of weeks. But if you notice a persistent problem, please contact our office for an appointment. We may be able to thin your veneers slightly to improve your enunciation.

Can I Drink Coffee with Veneers?

If you’re like nearly two-thirds of American adults who enjoy at least one cup of coffee per day, you may be wondering how your favorite beany beverage might affect your recent cosmetic enhancement. Fortunately, veneers are coated with a glaze strong enough to help them resist stains, so they’re less likely to become discolored than your enamel.

But if you’re not careful, you might stain your teeth faster than your cosmetics, which can result in a mismatched smile. Furthermore, the ceramic material veneers do not typically respond to topical bleach and cannot be whitened. You can help preserve the shade of your smile by minimizing your coffee consumption.
