But the truth is that these shells typically aren’t intended to come off once they’re cemented over the fronts of your enamel, except by a professional if repairs or replacements are needed. Not only that, but for them to fit correctly, a small amount of enamel must be removed, which doesn’t regenerate. However, because these covers sometimes wear down, they’re often required more “long-term” rather than “permanent”.
What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

As a result, only a minimal amount of enamel is removed to help preserve more of the natural strength and structure of the underlying teeth.
