However, there are some rare scenarios where it falls out before it needs to be replaced. You might be left shocked about what happened, but here are the steps you should take to protect your oral health from any harm.
Step #1: Rinse Out Your Crown
As soon as you feel that your crown is loose or completely out, you should take care in removing it from your mouth. Rinse it under water if it’s still intact and gently brush it. Place it in an airtight container and bring it to your dental appointment.
If your restoration has broken into many pieces, then be sure not to swallow any of them. Swish around water to remove any debris. Once you have this situation handled, then you need to tend to your exposed tooth. Using sensitive toothpaste, brush gently to remove harmful bacteria that can threaten it.
Step #2: Call Your Dental Office
Afterward, you need to call your dentist right away. They’ll likely try to fit you in right away to ensure you lessen your risk of an oral health issue. However, there is a slim chance they can’t see you the same day, but they’ll give you advice on how to care for your tooth afterward. If you have any questions or concerns, then be sure to ask them and follow what they say to avoid sensitivity.
Step #3: Guard Your Exposed Tooth
Depending on the state of your crown, there are a couple of different things you can do. If it’s still in good condition, then you can try to reattach it with toothpaste or temporary cement. These can help create enough suction or bond until your visit.
Some patients may be uneasy doing this or have trouble doing so; instead, cover it with sugarless gum or dental wax. These are effective and keep it protected for the time being. Just remember that they aren’t long-term solutions, and only your dentist can give you a permanent fix.
Step #4: Visit Your Dentist for Treatment
When it’s time for your appointment, your provider will perform an oral examination and take a look at your crown. It may be able to be cemented back on if it’s still pristine. However, getting a replacement may be best if there is any damage to it. That way, you can enjoy your results for longer without any worry.
